Course Content

Module 1: Introduction to SEL – Concepts & Relevance (based on frameworks like CASEL/UNESCO MGIEP)
n this foundational module, we’ll explore what Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) really means — and why it’s essential in today’s classrooms, especially in the early years. Drawing from leading global frameworks like CASEL’s Five Core Competencies and UNESCO MGIEP’s EMC² model, we’ll break down the key components of SEL in a way that’s practical, contextual, and easy to relate to your teaching experience. You’ll reflect on your own learning journey, understand how emotions shape thinking and behavior, and begin to see SEL not as an “extra,” but as something deeply embedded in everyday interactions with children.

  • Social Emotional learning: Why it is important
  • सीखना क्या है ? बच्चे कैसे सीखते हैं ?
  • understanding three popular frameworks – CASEL, EULER, EMC2, UNESCO MGIEP

Module 2: Self-awareness & Emotional Regulation (linked to UMANG practices)
Exploring the inner world of emotions — for children and educators In this module, we dive into the first step of SEL: understanding ourselves. We explore how self-awareness — recognizing our thoughts, emotions, and triggers — lays the foundation for healthy relationships and effective teaching. You'll also learn practical techniques for emotional regulation, especially important when working with young children in dynamic, often challenging classrooms. Drawing from reflective activities and mindfulness-based practices from the UMANG Fellowship (TISS), this module helps you connect theory to action — starting with yourself.

Module 3: Building Empathy & Relationships in Classrooms
Creating a safe space where every child feels seen, heard, and valued In this module, we explore the heart of social-emotional learning — empathy and connection. You’ll understand how trusting relationships with children form the basis of all meaningful learning, and how empathy isn’t just a feeling, but a skill that can be nurtured. We’ll dive into strategies to build emotionally safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive classrooms, where children are encouraged to express themselves and connect with one another. Drawing from stories, reflective conversations, and play-based activities, this module helps you build the kind of learning environment where kindness and respect grow naturally.

Module 4: SEL Strategies for Early Grades (age-appropriate activities)
Age-appropriate practices to nurture hearts and minds in early learning spaces This hands-on module focuses on how to bring SEL to life in classrooms for children aged 3 to 8. You’ll explore a range of age-appropriate, play-based strategies that embed SEL into daily routines, transitions, learning activities, and classroom culture — without needing extra time or resources. Whether you're working in a preschool, anganwadi, or primary school, these practices are designed to be simple, joyful, and deeply connected to children’s emotional and developmental needs. Inspired by grounded work in Indian classrooms and global practices, this module helps you make SEL visible, doable, and sustainable.

Resources
Ready-to-use materials to support your SEL journey In this final section, you’ll find a carefully curated collection of printable tools, activity guides, reflection prompts, and reference materials to support your continued learning and classroom implementation of SEL. These resources are grounded in both global frameworks and real classroom practices from India — helping you adapt and apply SEL meaningfully in your own context.
